Buckwheat Hull Pillows - How To Use & Are They Comfortable?
Buckwheat pillows are fast becoming a very popular alternative natural pillow. Our organic buckwheat hull pillows are made by hand here in the UK. We have answered some common questions below.
How often to replace a buckwheat pillow?
Buckwheat pillows should last for many years if cared for properly. If purchasing from a reputable seller you should be sent a pillow over-full. This means that when you get the pillow it should be too full and you will need to remove and store some hulls for future use. This is true for all the organic buckwheat pillows we sell. We sew and fill them in our UK factory. In the future you will then be able to use these extra organic hulls to replenish your pillow. The main reason for replacing a buckwheat pillow will be for hygiene reasons or damage to the cover like any other pillow.
Our organic buckwheat hull pillows come with two covers (1x internal cover & 1x external cover) to make them last even longer we also recommend you place them inside a standard pillow case.

How to use a buckwheat pillow?
Typical buckwheat pillows are placed at the top of the bed, under your head like a standard pillow. They are mold-able meaning you can move the hulls to contour your head, neck and shoulders. Once you have shaped your pillow a few hulls will move but generally it stays the same shape throughout the night.
Our organic buckwheat hull pillow also has removable hulls meaning you can adjust the amount of fill and therefore thickness of your pillow. This is helpful depending on how broad you are and your preferred sleep position.
- Side sleepers generally prefer a thicker pillow
- Back sleepers a little bit less full
- Front sleepers even less full
You can also purchase organic buckwheat knee pillows to improve spinal alignment and reduce hip and back pain when side sleeping here. These knee pillows go between your knees and attach with an adjustable strap to keep the pillow in place during the night.
Are buckwheat pillows comfortable?
Buckwheat pillows are all firm. We use organic buckwheat hulls in our pillows. When they are sent out we over fill them so that hulls can be removed to suit the individuals preference. This makes our buckwheat pillow height adjustable. Removing hulls does not however make them softer.
How much buckwheat hulls to fill a pillow?
We use around 3.6kg of organic buckwheat hulls to fill our pillows. It depends on your pillow case size and desired fill level. The more you fill the pillow the thicker it will be. Buckwheat hull pillows are firm and regardless of the fill they remain firm.
